Lebanon is thirty miles east of Nashville, the Wilson County seat, named after the biblical cedars for the local juniper trees the town grew up around. Incorporated in 1801, population close to fifty-two thousand as of 2024. The historic downtown Public Square is anchored by an 1848 courthouse designed by William Strickland, the same architect who designed the Tennessee State Capitol. Cumberland University was founded here in 1842; alumni include Cordell Hull, the Nobel Peace Prize recipient and FDR's Secretary of State. Cracker Barrel was also founded in Lebanon, in 1969, and still runs its corporate headquarters here.
The drink scene in Lebanon is smaller than in the bigger Middle Tennessee cities but sharper than a town this size usually manages. Lebanon Public House and Town Square Social handle the downtown cocktail-and-food side; Olivia Cocktail & Oyster Bar leans oyster-and-Champagne; The Velvet Room Speakeasy trades on the format. Cedar City Brewing and Tenn Lakes Brewing hold down the local craft-beer end. Most of it clusters within a block of the Public Square.

Cedar Springs at Bone Hollow

The Public Square
Lebanon's downtown roundabout square, ringed by the 1848 Wilson County Courthouse (William Strickland-designed) and the two-story brick storefronts around it. Downtown events, farmer's markets, and small ceremonies happen with city permits. Antique and gift shops line the block.
