Murfreesboro is thirty-five miles southeast of Nashville, the sixth-largest city in Tennessee at about 157,000 people, and growing faster than any city in the state. Middle Tennessee State University sits three miles from the historic square, adding twenty thousand undergraduates. The Rutherford County Courthouse on the Public Square dates to 1859. From 1818 to 1826, Murfreesboro was the capital of Tennessee. Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey
In Shelbyville, about twenty-five miles south of Murfreesboro. Named for Nathan Green, the enslaved distiller who taught Jack Daniel, and the first Black-owned distillery in the country. The 432-acre Nearest Green Distillery estate is the region's most editorially interesting whiskey stop, and a common source for signature-cocktail bourbon.
Main Street Music
Murfreesboro's only true concert venue, on West Main Street a few blocks from the square. Runs Thursday through Saturday. The room's tight enough to feel like a listening room and loud enough to feel like a rock club, depending on who's on stage.
